Welcome to the AsTeRICS Foundation
The AsTeRICS Foundation is a non-profit organisation that promotes the development and application of Open Source Assistive Technology (AT) for people with disabilities. In the course of several research projects, hardware- and software solutions have been developed at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, which can easily be adapted to individual needs and implemented at a low cost. These solutions include devices for alternative computer input, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and environmental control systems – as well as low-tech tools supporting activities of daily life. The AsTeRICS Foundation delivers these resources to users and other stakeholders. When tailoring AT solutions to the needs of a particular user, we work in close cooperation with the person to adapt the technology to their capabilities and needs. In this process, we create unique prototypes ranging from special input variants for computer games to accessible creativity tools or musical instruments.
The AsTeRICS Foundation provides partner organizations with knowledge about ICT-based assistive tools in form of design resources, as well as workshops and guest lectures. Our workshops offer hands-on experience for students, caretakers and users with special needs. In close cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien, the AsTeRICS Foundation provides DIY-construction kits for the FLipMouse input device, which are built by students during the course of their academic study. These assembled FLipMouse devices are then donated to individuals with severely reduced motor abilities. For more information see Mousehub.
